The “check engine” light is part of your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics (OBD) system. When it finds a problem in the electronic-control system that it can’t correct, the computer turns on a yellow warning indicator that’s labeled “check engine” or similiar, or shows the international check engine symbol. In addition to turning on the light, the computer stores a “trouble code” in its memory that identifies the source of the problem, such as a malfunctioning sensor or a misfiring engine.
The five most common check engine problems:

  • Faulty oxygen sensor
  • Loose or faulty gas cap
  • Faulty catalytic converter
  • Faulty mass airflow sensor
  • Faulty spark plugs or wires

A check engine light that comes on and stays on usually indicates a minor issue, like the examples listed above. However a flashing check engine light indicates a more serious issue that needs to be looked at immediately.
